Mindfulness Training

“Mr. Duffy lived a short distance from his body.” This quote from James Joyce in his book Dubliners points to how we have moved away from our present moment experience. Developing a practice of mindfulness can reconnect us with our life and resources in ways that can be transformative.

Mindfulness is defined by Jon Kabatt-Zinn as “paying attention, on purpose, to the present moment in a non-judgemental way”. We are often caught in projecting our awareness outward into the future and are planning and strategizing and we lose touch with the moment to moment experience. Planning and strategizing are important cognitive functions that have an important place in our lives, however we can often become too focused in this manner and experience a disconnection with our life as it unfolds moment to moment. The practice of mindfulness brings us back to the present moment, the real place of power and potential in our life.

Establishing a mindfulness practice can be easier with some one on one instruction and support. Adam offers individual sessions that introduce the basics of mindfulness practice and will help you establish your own daily practice. Drawing from his long-time meditation practice and study with the Jon Kabatt-Zinn, Ph.D, creator of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at UMass Medical School, Adam is uniquely qualified to assist you in coming home to your body in the present moment.

Often Adam works with Rolfing clients who are wishing to further develop the awarenesses that can come through the process of the hands-on work of Rolfing.

Mindfulness Training consists of:

Learning a basic sitting and walking meditation practice

Learning to work with the breath as an anchor to the present moment

Working with body sensations

Learning to work with the ind and thought processes in a direct way

Learning how to scan the body and move into deep relaxation
