"We are not stuff that abides, but patterns that perpetuate themselves" -Norbert Wiener

Rolfing Structural Integration is a scientifically validated body therapy. Unlike massage, Rolfing focuses not on the muscles but on their protective layer, called fascia (also known as connective tissue). (What is Fascia?). Muscles are contracting tissues that give the body and organs physical movement . The fascia surrounds the muscles, bones and organs in the body. The fascia gives muscles their shape and the body its structure. Rolfing is a type of body therapy that was developed by Dr. Ida Rolf. Brilliantly conceived, Rolfing seeks to systematically unwind chronic strain and bring the client into easier and more natural ways of being, standing, moving, and so on.

Rolfing Structural Integration aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning the fascia. As fascia is lengthened it allows the muscles to move more efficiently. The practitioner will apply pressure to the fascia, working the entire body in a systematic way. The person being rolfed participates in the process by moving, breathing and releasing the holding patterns within the connective tissue, allowing the innate balance of the body to become the teacher. When restricted fascia is released and lengthened the body can return to its structurally optimal position. In addition to physical manipulation, Rolfing includes education in using your realigned body properly, and exploration of the emotional issues that may arise as your body changes

The continuing pull of gravity, the stress of daily activities and physical injuries can pull the body out of alignment. The fascia gradually shortens, tightens and adjusts to accommodate the misalignment. When the body is out of alignment it creates inefficiency and imbalance resulting in stiffness, discomfort and loss of energy.

When a body is aligned and balanced it moves with greater ease. It requires less energy to function. Good posture is effortless and breathing is easier. The body becomes more flexible, more coordinated and athletic performance improves. (Before and After Photos).

The standard 10 session series may be completed at the rate of one session per week or spread over as long as 6 months. Each session is different, and builds on the ones that have gone before. Sessions are simultaneously tailored to your specific situation, and follow a logical pattern to produce the greatest results. Sessions last approximately 1 and 1/4 hours. The results of Rolfing are not only lasting, they are progressive. You are likely to feel and look continuously better for several months after your last session.

You will not need to repeat the basic 10 sessions, though for most people an average of 3 sessions a year supports an aging process that is more comfortable, graceful and slower than we have pictured previously.

Rolfing can be thought of as a tool that allows a person to access new layers of themselves. Many of us are creatures of habit and these patterns extend into our ways of standing, moving, and expressing. These habitual ways will inevitably become "locked" into our musculature. When this happens, movements and expressions begin to lose their spontaneity. One of the most fascinating aspects of Rolfing is the changes the client will experience as new pathways become possible. Whether it is an easier way to move, or a capacity to feel fully, or a feeling of lightness and suppleness in the body the changes that occur through Rolfing are always interesting and fresh.
